Laparoscopic appendectomy

Minimally invasive procedure, used for removing of the inflamed organ (appendix) from the patient’s abdomen.

Indications:

Acute pain in the right hypogastrium, persistent fever over 38°C, nausea, vomiting.

Having this symptoms, the patient should go to emergency department or visit surgery for final diagnosis.

Why the appendix should be removed?

The appendix is a remnant organ, located into the right hypogastrium, just at the beginning of the large intestine. It’s considered, that the appendix has a role in the local immunity system response. Even some authors named it as a “third tonsil” in our body.

When this organ starts inflaming, it have to be removed, otherwise the inflammation will continue to acute peritonitis and it is life-threatening condition.

What is “laparoscopic appendectomy”?

The operation starts with 3 incisions (one 10 mm and two 5 mm) on the abdominal  wall. Than after introducing the camera and working instruments, the appendix is cut off and removed trough the umbilical port.

Hospitalization period:

– from 2 to 5 days

Duration of the operation:

– from 30 minutes to 2 hours in complicated cases

Benefits:

– substantially less pain; minimal incisions on the skin, lesser percentage of postoperative hernias, faster recovery
